What's your footprint?

You can test your ecological footprint here. I'm not sure it can be entirely trusted for accuracy, but nonetheless, it's food for thought.

  5. Not realy. Sixty to eighty per cent of the food available in the market is imported. I eat a lot of meat, but as any good old-timer farmer will tell you (I only know of one on the planet), a farmer should never sell anything off his farm that can't walk off it - unless that customer is willing to make a deposit (ie. take a crap in the field) to replace the lost fertility.

Of course, farming today is the use of land to convert petroleum into food, so farmers (and certainly not agricultural scientists) never think of this. The system is obviously not sustainable and this is the pickle we are in with the looming problem of peak oil. Fertility makes a one-way track away from fields. People are going to have to learn not to dump toxics down the drain so that we can make use of solid and liquid human wastes as nature intended unless people in cities can agree to eat meat and meat only.
