Thankyou Radio 4!

I had been trying to think of a suitable translation for Sarkozy's 'karcherisé'. Well, the BBC reporter in Paris found it: 'cleaned away with a high power hose' (talking about what he's going to do to the the so-called youths of Paris' poor suburbs). Well, I suppose, if you have 'scum' and you don't want to scrub...

  1. Jez, I was a wee bit surprised to hear a UK ITV news presenter the other night refer to the troubles in Paris and elsewhere as "race riots."

I don't feel I am qualified to comment on the reasons for what has been going on there, but that was the first time I had heard that term being used.

Enlighten me if you will - was this the usual ITV "tabloid" reporting? I found it disturbing, anyway.

  2. Well, the BBC has been guilty of making such journalistic shortcuts, and yet I wouldn't call the Beeb 'tabloid'. Anyway, these riots are not race riots, in the sense that those in Birmingham apparently were(though I would call them 'communitarian' rather than 'race' riots). These are youth, who happen to be majoritarily of immigrant origin (who isn't in this country?) rioting against the police. So if you view the police as representatives of the 'white community', then yes, these are race riots...

  3. Thanks for that, Jez.

I am enlightened. I like the term 'communitarian' myself.
