Many may wonder how our consumerism here can affect the lives of others. Here's an example: The villagers sell the wood to traders in a practice that environmentalists say is a major cause of deadly landslides in Indonesia, by removing natural barriers to heavy rain run-off.
We react when natural disasters take place, generously (though not always enough), yet we fail to see how changing our everyday habits could help prevent such disasters in the first place.
